Short-form video (Shorts, Reels, TikTok)

Nothing until you clear the bar

However many views you get, you earn nothing until you pass a threshold the platform set — and the platform raises it without asking. It did exactly that on 2026-08-11.

Level 1

Post short videos and get paid by a platform programme. The three platforms ask for completely different things — YouTube wants scale, TikTok wants length, Instagram wants relationships. “Post lots of short videos and ad money arrives” is not true on any of them.

We have zero cases with a verified earnings figure, so we do not invent a revenue range. This model earns by views rather than by unit price, so the arithmetic lives in the ad-revenue calculator — as a range.

Where the money goes

  1. What the advertiser paidYou never see this number
  2. − the platform's cutAll of this happens inside Google
  3. = RPMYour share per 1,000 views — already net
  4. × views ÷ 1,000That is your revenue
  5. − VAT and income taxDepends on how you are registered
  6. = what you keepOnly this counts as earning

There is no unit price in this model, and there never will be. Revenue is views ÷ 1,000 × RPM, so “price per job” is not a quantity that exists here.

Put an expected view count into the ad-revenue calculator instead. It returns a range, not a single number — RPM swings ±50% with placement, device, season and visitor country.

Who you sell to

  • ⚠️ Viewers pay you nothing
  • The platform (it pays out through a programme, standing in for advertisers)
  • Brands (a separate contract, and excluded from programme payouts)

How the money comes in

  • YouTube Shorts — a share of the ad and Premium pool (creators get 45%; long-form gets 55%)
  • TikTok Creator Rewards — but only for videos over one minute
  • Instagram Gifts — $0.01 per star
  • Instagram seasonal and Breakthrough bonuses — invitation or application only
  • Brand deals — ⚠️ sponsored videos are excluded from the programmes above

Steps

  1. Start with TikTok — the lowest bar of the three (10,000 followers, 100,000 views in 30 days). Videos must run over a minute
  2. Apply for Instagram's Breakthrough bonus — it is for creators new to the platform, so now is the only time you qualify
  3. Turn on Instagram Gifts as soon as you hit 500 followers
  4. Join YouTube's partner programme before 2027-01-31 — after that the entry bar for new applicants doubles
  5. Every platform requires original, non-sponsored work. Sponsored posts are excluded, so count them separately

Risks

  • 🔴 The bar moves without warning. The 2026-08-11 announcement raises YouTube's new-applicant requirement from 4,000 to 8,000 watch hours, and from 10M to 20M Shorts views, effective 2027-02-01. The biggest risk in this model is not competition — it is rule changes
  • 🔴 From 2027-02-01, YouTube Shorts revenue sharing applies only to channels with 10M valid Shorts views in the last 90 days. That is roughly 110,000 views a day, sustained — and joining early does not exempt you from it
  • TikTok pays nothing on videos under a minute. A fifteen-second hit earns zero from that programme
  • Instagram Reels has no per-view ad share at all. Gifts, subscriptions, bonuses and brand deals — and the bonuses are invitation-only
  • Watch time from the Shorts feed does not count toward YouTube's 4,000-hour bar. Post only Shorts and that route stays closed permanently
  • No platform publishes what a view is actually worth. Every “$X per 1,000 views” figure you see is a third-party estimate

Do this today

  1. Pick the one platform whose bar you are closest to — usually TikTok
  2. If it is TikTok, first check whether your subject can sustain over a minute
  3. Check whether you currently qualify as a creator “new to the platform” for Instagram's Breakthrough bonus
